So Much To Learn Yet

You know my name, but not my story.

You’ve heard what I’ve done, but not what I’ve been through.

Have you taken the time to think this through. Each day I encounter a child in the hallway I say “Hello” or “Good Morning”. Many of these students don’t even know my name. I am not a classroom teacher, I am a “specialist”. I work with the teachers to help the children succeed. I believe it all begins the moment they see you each day. You decide what kind of day you will have. You can teach the children the same thing. We all have a name, but more importantly we all have a story. How many teachers take the time to know that story. Some children come with a “history”….but remember it’s just that his/her story…

The responsibility lies in the hands of each adult to remember that each new day is a new beginning. A time to leave behind the mistakes of yesterday and learn the lessons of today. Today can not begin with a judgement because it sets everyone up for failure…those who judge and those that are being judged.

Take the time to learn “his story”….it will give you a whole new perspective.

Wrong Place…Right Time….

Have you ever felt like a hamster in a wheel? Well today was one of those days.

My list of things to do was 2 pages long when the day began and when the day ended the list was just as long. I accomplished a number of things, what they were I can’t really tell you at this moment but I know they were worthwhile and needed to get done. Sometimes just being where you are needed is an important thing.

In the world of education when you are no longer in the classroom many people take your job for granted. They believe you don’t “do anything” any more. You are always available to test small groups. You leave the building often for training and workshops (that often finish long after the school day ends). You are often seen wandering the building which must mean you have nothing in particular to do. In general, you are considered an appendage that can be placed wherever you are needed.

Today I chose to place myself in a number of places that I didn’t need to be. I did hall duty numerous times because quite a few teachers were absent and I knew the extra eyes and ears were needed. I happened to walk into a few classes to observe  fabulous lessons going on.

A Day in the Life

Wrong Place...Right Time

a  girl fight in the hallway. This is by no means an easy task. These two girls were intent upon fighting and I was surrounded by a group of kids that wanted to see some action. But once again I was in the wrong place at the right time. The center of a circle of students with two girls about fight without any other adults, but armed with the knowledge of how to get these two girls away from one another.

Distraction…and so it went…..the students focused on the fight about to happen…I called for the one teacher that I could see to get help.

Then I went back and forth talking to the girls so they couldn’t focus on each other, as I did this the crowd around me began to dissipate as teachers became aware of the situation and corralled students into the classrooms. I finally looked up and saw administration coming and they separated the girls and disaster was averted! What an amazing feeling, keeping these two girls from harming each other and not letting anyone else get involved either.

I was in the wrong place…at the right time!

Watch What You Say

Has anyone ever told you that you should be careful what you say? I spent a good portion of my life doing just that. Then I learned…..

What I have to say is important and if I’m going to say it, maybe you should listen.

I make choices about everything I do, and I also make choices about everything I say. I really do think about the words that come out of my mouth before I say them. That is the reason they have such an effect on some people.

I am not going to use a filter. I am not on this earth to please others. I am here to make a change. If that change can only come by ruffling a few feathers then that is what I plan on doing.

I will not “filter it” for a few so that I can further my career. I will not “watch what I say” so that feelings don’t get hurt. I will say what needs to be said so that I know I have done all that I can to make the future better.

The future is in the hands of the children that we teach….

The teachers that teach those children need to remember that we are here to mold those minds….I will do all that I can to make sure they are molded and shaped into productive members of society.
